| Kennel Cough Information |
Canine infectious tracheobronchitis ( Bordetella) is one of the most prevalent infectious diseases in dogs. It is extremely difficult, if not impossible to prevent, and spreads very easily and quickly, especially in situations where your pal is in contact with other dogs. Most cases resolve themselves within a couple of weeks with a comfortable environment & antibiotics. Contact with other dogs includes going to a vet's office, grooming salons, doggy day care, kennels, training classes and even dog shows. It is characterized by a dry harsh cough that occurs with activity or excitement. We do not accept any dogs who exhibit symptoms of kennel cough, however, not all dogs who have kennel cough exhibit obvious symptoms. We have a trained vet tech on staff who examines the dogs on their arrival to be sure we have a safe environment. We do require immunizing your pet with the Bordetella vaccination at least once a year if you decide to have your pal engage in activities here at PawPaca as this does significantly reduce the risk of contracting the infection. However, there are 57 different strains of Bordetella & the vaccination protects against the 14 most common, so there is still no guarantee that your pal will not contract some type of kennel cough. But we believe it's better to be safe and obtain the vaccination. Obviously, the best way to eliminate your pal’s risk of contracting Canine Cough is to eliminate your pal’s contact with other dogs. For a lot of our pals, that wouldn't be practical or any fun for them!! Dogs are naturally pack animals who love and need social interaction with other dogs in order to maintain a healthy, balanced life. We also take additional steps to provide a healthier environment for your pal. The kennels & floors are disinfected daily with bleach & an industrial cleaner and the air is sprayed often with disinfectant. The water and food dishes are stainless steel and are sanitized between guests. Blankets are nylon and are washed between guests. The dog’s bathroom area is disinfected daily. The most important step is client education & supervision your pal receives from trained, experienced and loving caregivers. We provide wonderful & sanitary boarding & daycare conditions offered in Waupaca. However, there is no way we can completely prevent your pal from getting “Canine Cough” or any other disease. You do take a risk boarding your pal anywhere. The bacteria, virus and mycoplasamas that cause Canine Cough are present in all kennels. Nevertheless, we here at PawPaca pride ourselves as being the finest boarding facility in Waupaca. Stop and see us anytime and see for yourself!! Nicole Wanty & The Staff at PawPaca |
